I had initially set the channel to "auto" in the DD-WRT settings and the router was evidently picking a 5 GHz channel that the AirPort Express was NOT compatible with. Once I explicitly changed the 5 GHz channel to something the AirPort Express was compatible with (I used 149), it connected fine.
